INDIA, Mughal Empire. Jalal al-Din Muhammad Akbar, 1556-1605. Rupee (Silver, 27 mm, 11.34 g, 12 h), mint off flan, AH 970(?) = AD 1562/3. Within a cartouche, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad / rasūl Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); swastika to left; in the four segments around, ‘bi sidq-i Abī Bakr – bi adl-i Umar – [bi hayāʾ-i Usmān – bi ilm-i Alī]’ (‘By the truth of Abu Bakr, by the justice of Umar, by the modesty of Uthman, by the wisdom of Ali’ in Persian). Rev. Within a cartouche, ‘Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Akbar pādshāh-i ghāzī 970(?)’ (‘Jalal al-Din Muhammad Akbar, the holy warrior king. 970(?)’ in Persian); illegible mint formula in the margin. Cf.
